This subject will explore the best-practice and current National Guidelines, COPD-X in relation to the diagnosis, assessment, management and care of people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The subject also includes an exploration and critical analysis of scientific literature that governs clinical practice in this field. Assessment includes critical evaluation of research, reflection and a literature review, focusing on an area of interest for the student.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to discuss the epidemiology of COPD within the historical and world wide context;
  • be able to critique the current Australian recommendations for diagnosis and management of COPD;
  • be able to describe the respiratory pathology underlying COPD, according to both 'type' and severity of COPD;
  • be able to critically evaluate the management strategies used in the care of people with COPD;
  • Be able to define and relate the concepts of evidence-based practice and reflective practice to the role of the COPD-X Guidelines in service provision and the care of people with COPD.
