SOC314 Organisations, Culture and Society (8)

This subject combines two traditionally separate areas of study: the sociology of work and organisational theory, and falls into three parts. After a brief historical introduction, which examines the origins and peculiarities of modern work organisations, we review the main theoretical approaches to organisational life. The final extended section focuses on a selection of critical contemporary issues, including organisational design, new technology, restructuring, flexibility, and organisational culture.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to analyse the internal structure and dynamics of modern work organisations as "open systems", with particular emphasis on sources of stability and change.
