SPH421 Transition to Professional Practice (16)

In this capstone subject, students expand and consolidate their learning in preparation for transition to practice. Students will work in inter-professional teams to explore clinical scenarios and will develop skills in the management of teams and services. In this subject, students will also critically reflect on their development of competency, and future learning needs, and present evidence that they are
competent to practice through the preparation of a simulated job application.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to evaluate and integrate service delivery models, resources and workplace policies to create a simulated speech pathology service for a specific population
  • be able to accurately and objectively evaluate their own competency and develop plans for ongoing learning
  • be able to critically analyse the principles of supervisory practice
  • be able to integrate collaborative and holistic viewpoints within inter-professional teams to analyse clinical scenarios and propose relevant management strategies

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Business management in speech pathology practice (incl. policy, funding, service delivery, prioritisation and rationing, ethics/medico-legal/privacy etc.)
  • Current issues in speech pathology
  • Inter-professional practice: communication and clinical reasoning with professionals from other allied health disciplines
  • Supervisory practice: working with teacher's aides, students etc
  • Demonstration of Entry level competency
  • Job applications and career planning
