SPH544 Transition to Professional Practice in Speech Pathology (8)

In this capstone subject, students learning focuses on preparation for transition to graduate speech pathology practice. Students critically reflect on their competency development across the duration of the Master of Speech Pathology, and identify and justify ongoing professional learning goals. Students engage with a range of current topics in speech pathology and critique current practice, research and service delivery in relation to these. Students integrate understanding of current practice in Australian and overseas contexts with a focus on ethical reasoning and cultural responsiveness. Students will also develop skills in the design, management, and evaluation of speech pathology programs and services relevant to current speech pathology practice contexts.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to synthesise and evidence own development of speech pathology knowledge, skills and attributes to demonstrate entry level competency
  • be able to critically analyse and reflect on their own competency development and demonstrate autonomy and responsibility as a life-long learner
  • be able to integrate understanding of recent developments in speech pathology practice and current professional issues to plan and execute contextually and culturally responsive speech pathology programs/practices
  • be able to apply speech pathology and generic professional knowledge, skills and attributes, demonstrating autonomy, adaptability and responsibility in professional practice contexts
  • be able to communicate complex synthesis of professional knowledge, skills and attributes to specialist and non-specialist audience

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Current issues in speech pathology (incl. policy, funding, service delivery, prioritisation and rationing, ethics/medico-legal/privacy etc.)
  • Supervisory practice: working with teacher's aides, students etc.
  • Management in health care
  • Critical reflection on integration of knowledge, skills and attributes for Entry level competency
  • Life-long learning
  • Job applications and career planning
  • Transition to professional practice

Residential School

This subject contains a 4 day Compulsory Residential School.

This compulsory residential school allows students to demonstrate their competency in a range of capstone learning and assessment tasks. These address Entry level skills, knowledge and attributes across the speech pathology range of practice areas and populations as required by professional standards. Students will be expected to cover the travel and accommodation costs associated with attendance at the residential school.

Special Resources

Students are required to attend a compulsory residential school on the Albury-Wodonga campus, to complete capstone assessment tasks. Students will be expected to cover the travel and accommodation costs associated with attendance at the residential school.
