Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to demonstrate the main issues relating to the role of scientists in society
  • be able to demonstrate the social impact of technological change
  • be able to demonstrate presentday concerns relating to the application of science and technology.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

1. The Sociology of Science (scientific norms, science as ideology) 2. Case Study Materials (examination of issues to be selected for the case study) 3. Technology and Social Change (political economy of science and technology) 4. Selected Issues in Science, Technology and Society (such as the environment, socio-economic & cultural issues, industry-specific examples, etc.)
