This subject defines and examines the nature of pastoral counselling in relation to trauma and crisis intervention. A background to understanding trauma and its potential impact on individuals is given. Models of crisis intervention are examined, together with appropriate pastoral responses, skills training and professional issues.

Restricted to students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Pastoral Counselling, Master of Pastoral Counselling, Master of Pastoral Counselling (Clinical) and Master of Ministry who have met the required prerequisites.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to recognise and evaluate the presence of crisis situations
  • be able to recognise the symptoms of a response to crisis and any resultant trauma
  • be able to articulate a variety of pastoral situations involving crises
  • be able to outline and discuss critically crisis intervention models
  • be able to apply appropriate pastoral counselling responses to crisis situations
  • be able to reflect theologically on spiritual aspects of crisis and trauma
  • be able to reflect critically on professional issues and their own processes in crisis situations

  • Professional and ethical issues in pastoral crisis counselling

Residential School

This subject contains a 3 day Compulsory Residential School.

The residential school for this subject will foster a supportive/safe environment for pracitical skills training, self-reflective practice and discussion of relevant subject material. It will involve roleplays, practice counselling sessions, experiential exercises, lectures and discussion groups.
