THL524 Reflective Practitioner Perspectives in Pastoral Counselling (16)

In this subject, students will select an aspect of pastoral counselling practice on which they write a 10,000 word paper. They will be required to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of this specific area of knowleldge through independent and rigorous thought, critical evaluation of relevant literature and professional application of their pastoral counselling practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to reflect critically, at graduate level, on concepts or issues arising from their study and practical experience in the chosen pastoral counselling field;
  • be able to undertake critical evaluation of appropriate literature relating to their chosen area of study;
  • be able to demonstrate high order skill in analysis, evaluation and integration the findings from the literature review with reflections on their own experience and knowledge in the chosen pastoral counselling area;
  • be able to demonstrate professional communication skills in the interaction with their academic supervisor;
  • be able to demonstrate a high order of independent planning, research, organisation, and written and oral communication skills through the preparation and presentation of a substantial essay in the chosen pastoral counselling field.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The student, in consultation with the lecturer/academic supervisor, will select an appropriate area of study within the field of pastoral counselling. The 10,000 word paper should be a critical investigation of an area of practical application in pastoral counselling involving a detailed exploration of the chosen topic and a critical evaluation of relevant literature.
  • Information and readings will be provided to students in the following areas:
  • Literature reviews and guided reading practice
  • Critical analysis of literature
  • Reflective practice within pastoral counselling
  • Integration of reflection and literature analysis
  • The supervision process in guiding reading and research
