This subject engages students in the practical aspects of staging live and mediated performances. It introduces the idea of career-long portfolio development and strategies to manage professional practice in creative and performing arts. Students develop their understanding of technical production roles, production planning and delivery and apply their knowledge in real and simulated environments.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to implement principles of theatre-making and mediated performance;
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of production roles;
  • be able to undertake production roles in live and mediated performances;
  • be able to work collaboratively in theatre and production contexts; and
  • be able to develop and reflect on an individual portfolio of work.


This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Overview of production roles
  • Play analysis and the conduct of dramaturgical research
  • Your role in a collaborative theatre production
  • Structuring and preparing presentations
  • Familiarity with lighting and sound rigs, and the processes of stage production
  • Safe handling and use of studio lighting and audio equipment
  • Planning for live theatre and special event productions
  • Budgeting, scheduling, and marketing strategies
  • How to develop and manage a professional portfolio

Special Resources

This subject requires access to the authentic learning spaces available through the School of Communication and Creative Industries at Bathurst campus. These include the Ponton Theatre and the production building 1454.
