THM201 Devised Performance 1 (8)

This subject develops students' skills for creating and facilitating live performances in site specific contexts. It introduces students to Australian and international trends in contemporary circus, new vaudeville and special event performance. Students research and devise multiple performances in designated non-theatre venues. Additionally, each participant assumes responsibility for technical production in each performance.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to create, plan and produce devised performances for public audiences;
  • be able to apply and evaluate theories of creative processes;
  • be able to develop and facilitate a training practice for performance preparation; and
  • be able to research, analyse and execute theatre-making processes.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Theories of creative processes
  • Introduction to devised traditions including contemporary circus, new vaudeville and special event performance
  • Theatre as a tool for social commentary
  • Story structure, play, improvisation and task-based devising for character
  • Ensemble training, rehearsal, production skills and planning for public performances
  • Audience and setting research and preparation

Special Resources

This subject requires access to the authentic learning spaces available through the School of Communication and Creative Industries at Bathurst campus. These include the Ponton Theatre and the production building 1454.
