The subject explores the art and science of digital compositing as used in the production processes for conventional and hybrid multimedia. Students are introduced to the software and techniques used to digitally manipulate combinations of source images to produce integrated results for informational, artistic, educational and entertainment contexts.

Not available to students who have previously completed VFX205 Digital Compositing.

Assumed Knowledge

Students are assumed to have a demonstrable knowledge of the practice of producing visual images for a range of media uses before entering this subject. Students who do not have a working knowledge of introductory animation and image compositing are advised to undertake CCI102 first.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of how theories of compositing may be applied to analogue and digital media;
  • be able to apply an industry standard production process to the generation of new compositing work;
  • be able to apply a range of creative, theoretical and technical skills to respond to compositing problems;
  • be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the practice of compositing for a range of media outputs; and
  • be able to critically reflect on the creative potential of compositing and custom aesthetics.

  • Fundamentals of compositing
  • High resolution imagery
  • Layering
  • Keying
  • Basic matte painting
  • Tracking
  • Rotoscoping
  • Colour correction and control
  • Pre and Post production consideration
  • Production - process and pipelines

Special Resources

Students will require access to an industry standard 3D Modelling/Rendering and Digital Compositing software suite.
