VPA105 Typography and Publishing (8)

This subject will introduce the history, principles and applications of typography as a means of expression and communication. It will also examine the relationship between type and image within both the print and digital context. Students will explore page structure and the use of grids within single and double page print layouts, brochure and other promotional material design, and begin to build an appreciation of related production processes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of type classification, anatomy and visual connotation;
  • be able to identify a variety of typefaces and have an understanding of their associated history, principles and applications;
  • be able to demonstrate a critical approach to font selection for different production contexts;
  • be able to apply the principles of designing with type and image;
  • be able to employ grids to design a variety of print and digital page layouts; and
  • be able to demonstrate a critical approach to a variety of page layouts and information.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introductory project management for layout design projects: the brief, the scope, the production process for print and online documents
  • Introduction to type: type anatomy, classification, history, principles and applications
  • Introduction to the architecture of layout design I: the grid
  • Introduction to the architecture of layout design II: hierarchy (visual and information), readability and legibility
  • The Context of Type: selection of typefaces and their relationship to content, imagery, colour and frame

Special Resources

Students are required to have access to the industry standard graphic design software package - the Adobe Creative Suite.
