This subject provides students with a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the actor or designer's role in a contemporary theatre context while deepening their knowledge and integration of technique, process and genre analysis.

It is assumed that students will have undertaken a minimum of four (3) fundamental acting or design based subjects prior to undertaking this subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of style through acting or design as it applies to contemporary theatre;
  • be able to independently research, analyse and interpret story, character and environment in current contexts;
  • be able to interact and freely communicate with the director;
  • be able to demonstrate a capacity to work effectively and cooperatively in groups and be able to take direction; and
  • be able to clearly produce and implement a personal acting or design process.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Analysis of Contemporary Theatre
  • 20th Century plays - case study, analysis, interpretation and critique
  • 21st Century plays - case study, analysis, interpretation and critique
  • Stylised character and environment development
  • Text analysis, research and dramaturgical process in contemporary theatre
  • Establishing an independent and personal methodology for the development of a role
  • Converting process into theatrical realisation in the professional theatre environment
  • Working within a collaborative company to professional standards
