This subject develops students' expertise in audio post-production for screen media. It covers the theory and practice of non-linear audio post-production for television, film and other screen mediums. The subject investigates the relationship with visual post-production, and how their co-dependency is essential for high quality screen works.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to construct a narrative through audio post-production practices;
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the production pipeline, file formats and workflow necessary in a post- production environment;
  • be able to apply the various roles and responsibilities of audio post-production;
  • be able to decide upon various technical and creative options in audio post-production to achieve desired outcomes;
  • be able to import a visual post-production delivery, create a body of work in audio post-production, and export various final format deliveries;
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of film sound theory; and
  • be able to articulate the history of sound for screen, and the relevant advancements in screen sound concepts and theory.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction to audio post production (the roles/ specialisations)
  • Production pipelines and file formats
  • Dialogue editing
  • ADR recording and editing
  • Foley recording and editing
  • Immersive atmospheres
  • Sound effects and sound design
  • Introduction to mixing
  • Final mix and deliveries

Special Resources

It is expected that students have access to the following:

    Avid Pro Tools software;
    Headphones;
    A device capable of recording sound;
    A recording studio capable of ADR and Foley recording with picture synchronisation; and
    Sound mixing studio.
