ASH402 Honours Dissertation Proposal and Literature Review (16)

In this subject students will develop a research question, design a project to respond to it, and then explain the design as part of a research proposal. Students are expected to critically analyse existing literature related to their research question to write a literature review that explains how their planned research will build on existing knowledge and its contribution to the field. Students will examine the ethical considerations of research and the requirements of a human research ethics application.

This subject is only available to students who have met the admissions requirements for entry into the Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences (Honours) course.
It is expected that ASH401 will be either completed concurrently (by full-time students) or prior (by part-time students) to enrolment in ASH402.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to clearly communicate key ideas and concepts;
  • be able to demonstrate skills in reviewing, critiquing and synthesising research literature;
  • be able to construct and build an argument for their research;
  • be able to design a small-scale project that uses appropriate ideas, methods and concepts;
  • be able to articulate an understanding of research methods and processes in the form of a written research proposal; and
  • be able to complete a human ethics application for a research project.

  • Identification of relevant research literature
  • How to review literature
  • Literature review methodologies
  • Identification of a research focus/project/question to investigate
  • Preparation of a methodologically sound research proposal
  • Ethical considerations in research
  • Human ethics application preparation and submission (if required)
