BMS139 Pathology Specimen Collection (4)

This subject will provide students with the foundation knowledge required for pathology specimen collection. Students will learn, and apply, the principles of pathology collection techniques (including phlebotomy), workplace health and safety, medical terminology, infection control including compliance policies and procedures. This practical subject will be run in a residential school format with both internal and distance cohorts attending the practical sessions.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain the compliance policies and procedures associated with infection control and prevention;
  • be able to describe workplace health and safety regulations; and relevant first aid in pathology collection;
  • be able to define medical terminologies in pathology specimen collection;
  • be able to identify and explain clinical risks in pathology specimen collection;
  • be able to demonstrate proficiency in the key procedures associated with venous blood collection; and
  • be able to demonstrate cultural competence regarding Indigenous and other cultures in patient care.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Policies and Procedures related to Pathology Specimen collection;
  • Infection control and First Aid in Pathology collection;
  • Medical terminologies;
  • Types and techniques in pathology collection; and
  • Venous blood collection - Phlebotomy.

Residential School

This subject contains a 5 day Compulsory Residential School.

This subject is a micro-session practical subject and the residential school will teach students the practical skills required in specimen collection with a particular focus on phlebotomy.
