BMS175 Human Anatomy and Physiology for Nurses 2 (8)

This subject builds on previous learning, to develop the students capacity to link knowledge about human anatomy and physiology to clinical reasoning and safe nursing practice. The subject completes the examination of the body by learning about the integumentary, endocrine, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, urinary (renal), and reproductive systems. Also it will consider the importance of chromosomes, genes and DNA; and the impact of sexual maturation and ageing on anatomical and physiological systems and processes.

No offerings have been identified for this subject in 2020.

Where differences exist between the Handbook and the SAL, the SAL should be taken as containing the correct subject offering details.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain the role of genes and inheritance, as well as fluids and electrolytes, in normal body function;
  • be able to identify the human anatomy and describe the physiology of specific organ systems (integumentary, endocrine, musculo-skeletal, gastrointestinal, urinary/renal, and reproductive systems);
  • be able to describe the relationship of metabolism to normal body function; and
  • be able to explain the impact of ageing on human anatomy and physiology of the ageing process.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • MODULE 1: Anatomy and physiology of the integumentary system;
  • MODULE 2: Genes, DNA and Inheritance;
  • MODULE 3: Anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system;
  • MODULE 4: Anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system;
  • MODULE 5: Anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal system;
  • MODULE 6: Anatomy and physiology of the urinary/renal systems;
  • MODULE 7: Anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system; and
  • MODULE 8: Anatomy and physiology of sexual maturation and the ageing process.

Residential School

This subject contains a 3 day Compulsory Residential School.

The residential school is undertaken by distance/online students only.  The purpose of the residential school is to provide hands-on learning experiences, including laboratory sessions for complex anatomy and physiology concepts. Experience has shown there is no effective substitute for hands on experiences to enable proper understanding of this content.

Special Resources

Students attending compulsory residential schools on CSU campuses will incur costs associated with travel, accommodation and required resources.
