This subject introduces radio as a specialised field of study. This subject explores the early formation and pioneering days of Australian radio progressing to the structure and operation of modern radio-based media organisations, including community, commercial, and government broadcasters. Contemporary influences on the industry, such as digital radio, internet broadcasting, cross-media ownership, social media, narrowcasting and podcasting are also examined.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to identify and describe legal and regulatory frameworks operating within the Australian radio environment;
  • be able to identify roles, structures and operations of radio-based media organisations in Australia; and
  • be able to describe digital and social media trends in the radio industry.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The history and development of Australian radio
  • The key legislation, codes of practice and regulatory authorities in Australian radio
  • Roles, structures and overall organisation of stations and networks in Australian radio
  • Content for radio audiences in the digital age - broadcast, narrowcast, podcasting
  • The role of the radio medium within a converging and social communication environment
  • Programming formats and how they are used to position radio organisations

Special Resources

This subject requires access to specialist recording equipment and studio facilities. On campus students can access these facilities in the School of Communication and Creative Industries authentic learning spaces. Distance students will either need to access the equipment through a proximate community or commercial radio station or purchase suitable equipment for their home.
