COM229 Documentary Production (8)

This subject develops media production, planning and research skills through the creation of an original audio or audiovisual documentary. Students explore the documentary genre through analysis of exemplary documentaries and analyse and reflect on documentary production practices before proposing, researching, developing and producing their own documentary.

Assumed Knowledge

It is assumed students have some knowledge of basic filming and audio recording technique. This could be gained through completion of COM127 (formerly CCI100) or similar subjects. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to research, plan and stage a documentary production process;
  • be able to visualise story ideas for video documentary;
  • be able to create a sense of movement, place and time for audio documentary;
  • be able to capture, select and use broadcastable audio; and
  • be able to produce a documentary following principles of storytelling and structure.

  • The documentary genre
  • Research for documentary production
  • Production planning
  • Production processes and practice in documentary
  • Analysis of production within the documentary genre

Special Resources

This subject requires access to audiovisual recording equipment. On campus students can access this equipment through the School of Communication and Creative Industries. Distance students may need to borrrow or purchase suitable equipment.
