Students will be required to engage effectively in groups with a chosen high need community group to plan and develop oral health promotion activities.
In this subject students will be introduced to the determinants of oral health from a sociological perspective and learn how these impact on oral health outcome, including cultural perspectives of health. Key concepts of health promotion relevant for oral health practitioners will be established with an emphasis on effective community engagement. Communicating with communities with high health needs will be an emphasis. A foundation of the oral health therapist's role in oral health promotion and improving oral health outcome will be established, covering concepts of need in oral health, power and authority in dental care and conceptual models of health and illness.
A deeper knowledge will be developed when planning a meaningful oral health promotion activity in partnership with a regional community group.
