This subject provides students with an overview of organisational structures and the diversity of managerial and leadership roles in early childhood services and schools. Principles of effective management and leadership are interrogated and the application of these to various contexts is explored. Awareness of relevant legislation, government policies and regulation is developed as are management functions and skills. Students have the opportunity to specialise in Studies of Australian Indigenous Education in this subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of leadership theories in educational contexts;
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the challenging nature of leadership, particularly in terms of gender and the field of early childhood education and care;
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of, and an ability to apply a variety of administrative and leadership skills in educational contexts;
  • have the ability to locate and apply the implications of the legislation, government policies and regulations relevant to early childhood services and schools;
  • be able to strategically apply leadership skills for making positive change for individuals, families and communities, in a diverse range of contexts;
  • understand the enactment of leadership within classrooms, services/schools and communities;
  • be able to use and critically evaluate the effectiveness of information and communication technology as managerial tools;
  • be able to effectively communicate with families, caregivers, colleagues, and other stakeholders in the local community.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

-Approaches to, and principles of, management and leadership. -The application of leadership to specific contexts including early childhood and primary education; rural and remote; and specific communities, service types and management structures. -Communication; interpersonal skills; conflict resolution and negotiation. -Collaboration; decision-making; and change management. -The legal responsibilities of early childhood professionals including legislation, government policies and regulations. -Children's services administration: staff development; staff meetings; team building; working with families and administrative systems. -The development of service and school communities that support the learning and wellbeing of students, families and colleagues -Exploration of the whole of government approach to education in communities.
