EMA441 Curriculum Method 1: Visual Arts (8)

In this subject, students develop a foundational understanding of secondary Visual Arts education, Years 7- 12, with a focus on the NSW Stage 4 and 5 syllabi. Continuums of learning in Creative Arts K-12 and NSW Visual Arts, Photographic and Digital Media Years 7-10 and Visual Design Years 7-10 syllabi are explored. The subject begins with an examination of Visual Arts as a discipline and the self as learner. From this foundation, the subject then addresses understandings of teaching and learning in Visual Arts, local and global curriculum, the nature of Visual Arts teaching in schools and sites of learning beyond the classroom. Through engagement with these topics, students will develop an understanding of approaches to Visual Arts education, theories and practice with a focus on how to engage students in the secondary years in meaningful, rigorous and purposeful learning. Formal assessment focuses on the development and expression of knowledge in relation to Visual Arts education and the application of developing knowledge and skills through authentic practice-based tasks.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain the knowledge base and models of pedagogy underpinning the principles and practices of teaching and learning visual arts as exemplified in the NSW Visual Arts 7-10 Syllabus, the NSW Photographic and Digital Media Years 7-10 Syllabus and the NSW Visual Design Years 7-10 Syllabus;
  • be able to explain the role and value of Visual Arts (Stages 4-5) in the continuum of learning in Creative Arts K-12 and in the broader school curriculum;
  • be able to plan learning activities, aligned with Stage 4-5 Visual Arts syllabus outcomes, and apply strategies for differentiating teaching, learning and assessment in visual arts for students with diverse needs and abilities;
  • be able to develop effective teaching, learning, and assessment sequences that incorporate cross-curriculum priorities / general capabilities in Visual Arts (Stages 4 and 5);
  • be able to identify, use and develop resources for secondary Visual Arts, creating connections between Visual Arts and the wider community;
  • be able to apply pedagogical models for teaching Visual Arts, including strategies explicitly designed to develop students' literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills in Visual Arts; and
  • be able to effectively employ ICT applications to support learning and teaching of content and processes in Visual Arts.

  • The foundations of Visual Arts education
  • The Visual Arts Years 7-10 Syllabus (2003), Photographic and Digital Media Years 7-10 Syllabus (2004) and Visual Design Years 7-10 Syllabus (2004) including aims, objectives, outcomes, content, course requirements, key terms, assessment and examination materials
  • The role and value of Visual Arts in the broader school curriculum and the development of students' literacy, digital literacy and numeracy capabilities in Visual Arts
  • The place of secondary Visual Arts across the continuum of learning in Creative Arts K-12, including an understanding of the links between Stage 3 and Stage 4
  • Curriculum in Visual Arts
  • Underpinning principles and practices and models of pedagogy for teaching/learning and assessing Visual Arts
  • Strategies for teaching and assessing Visual Arts practices
  • Strategies for differentiating teaching, learning and assessment to support students with varying abilities to access the Visual Arts curriculum and demonstrate achievement
  • NESA assessment requirements for the Record of School Achievement for Visual Arts
  • Places of learning beyond the classroom
  • Employing ICT applications to support specific syllabus outcomes, content and processes
  • Understanding the literacy and numeracy demands of the Visual Arts Classroom
  • Knowledge and understanding of the use of digital resources and tools, including the selection of appropriate digital content, to complement teaching strategies, enhance learning sequences and lesson plans, and meet curriculum, assessment and reporting requirements in Visual Arts
