This subject comprises a professional experience placement up to 25 days in a service for three to five year old children. It will enable students to develop communication skills with children and adults and practise skills in observation and planning.

Enrolment Restrictions

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) are required to complete 25 days of the professional experience placement.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to apply academic knowledge and principles to the 3-5 years setting
  • be able to observe children's play and learning and have the capacity to use this documentation of both individual and group play interests as a basis for future planned play-based experiences
  • be able to plan, implement and evaluate learning experiences for children aged 3-5 years based on individual capacities and interests
  • be able to initiate and sustain positive and sensitive contacts with young children on an individual basis
  • be able to explain the necessity of abiding by the regulations and quality assurance procedures that apply to settings for children aged 3-5 years
  • be able to access and make resources to enhance the learning and development of 3-5 year old children
  • be able to link child development theory to early childhood pegagogical practices and programs for 3-5 year olds
  • be able to explain the roles of the professional, parents, and communities in early childhood services
  • be able to use reflective practice with others in their work with children
  • be able to competently employ effective classroom and behaviour management practices appropriate to children aged 3-5
  • be able to explain transition issues relevant to children 3-5
  • have successfully completed up to 25 days of professional experience with 3-5 year olds
  • be able to demonstrate a range of pedagogical, social, and administrative skills commensurate with the professional experience setting and the student's stage in the course.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 25 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

In this professional experience students will be working with children aged between three and five years. They will be required to observe and evaluate children's play and learning, and to plan future play-based learning experiences based on their theoretical studies and the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), the National early childhood curriculum, and reflect on their developing teaching skills. This professional experience aims to provide the teacher education student with the skills to become the pedagogical leader of the early childhood education and care setting.
