This subject will involve up to 30 days in a school setting as required for accreditation and as approved by the course director.
Building upon the pedagogical knowledge and skills that teacher education students have already gained, both the preparatory phase and the professional experience placement are important to furthering their learning. A key focus of the subject is the teacher education students' progression toward attainment of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the graduate level. This progress will be reflected upon and documented with supporting evidence in a portfolio prior to, during, and after the professional experience placement, which involves up to 30 days in a secondary school under the mentorship of a supervising teacher. Another major aspect of this subject is learning about and considering the benefits, challenges, and skills needed for fostering positive communication and educational partnerships with young people, parents and families within communities. While on the professional experience placement, teacher education students will be able to observe interactions between school, home and community contexts, and recognise the pivotal role of education to the wellbeing of children, families and communities.
