EPT341 Positive Classroom Climates (8)

This subject is designed to develop students' understanding and knowledge of creating a positive learning environment. Students will be introduced to theoretical models of classroom management and their application in relation to the physical, social and emotional developmental stages of children. The importance of incorporating appropriate strategies that respond to the learning needs of children from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socio-economic backgrounds will covered.
Students will learn to maintain a supportive and safe classroom environment that deals with challenging behaviours, bullying and cyberbullying and crisis and emergency response.
The professional, legislative and social responsibilities of teachers is addressed in relation to school policies, staff relationships and communication with parents and the community.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to discuss how quality teaching is a key factor in effective classroom management;
  • be able to apply appropriate theories and models for a supportive, inclusive and safe learning environment;
  • be able to discuss positive and practical approaches to manage disruptive behaviour;
  • be able to identify the physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of children and how these may affect their behaviour;
  • be able to identify issues that can affect positive learning environments, such as bullying and cyberbullying, and strategies to deal with them;
  • be able to discuss professional and legislative responsibilities of teachers with regard to protecting the safety and wellbeing of children and providing equitable opportunities for learning; and
  • be able to respond to the behavioural needs of children from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socio-economic backgrounds.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Theories of positive classroom management
  • Professional and legislative responsibilities of a teacher
  • Physical, social and emotional development of children and how these can affect behavioural responses to learning engagement and social interactions in the school environment
  • Strategies for managing children's challenging behaviours
  • How to develop a positive learning environment for all children: ensuring an appropriate inclusive environment for children from culturally responsive teaching, active listening, verbal and non-verbal communication, managing classroom conflict and working as part of a team between children and teacher

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 6 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

One day per week observation in a Stage 2 or 3 classroom to observe the application of theory in practice, through the strategies teachers use to nurture positive learning environments.
