EPT502 Issues in Professional Learning (8)

The on-going professional learning of educators is recognised as central to the quality of teaching in a wide range of education and training settings. This subject examines current research, policy and practice related to the professional learning of educators. Particular attention will be paid to the links between professional knowledge, learning and practice; the ways in which professional learning can be developed and sustained in specific education and training sites; the leadership of professional learning; and professional learning innovations. Students will have opportunities to relate key ideas in the subject to their professional practice across education and training settings.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to critically evaluate underlying theories, conceptual frames and structures which shape professional learning practices/policies in education and training contexts;
  • be able to analyse developments in professional learning practices within historical and socio-political contexts related to teaching, teachers' work and professional knowledge in education and training contexts;
  • be able to examine the development and efficacy of professional learning policies and models to justify professional learning practices in education and training contexts; and
  • be able to reflect critically on key professional learning concepts and ideas to promote continuous improvement across chosen education and training contexts.

  • The relationship between professional learning, professional knowledge and professional practice
  • Professional learning policy and reform
  • Types and forms of professional learning opportunities across education and training contexts
  • Leading and evaluating professional learning practices at local levels
