FIN381 International Banking and Finance (8)

In this subject the students will learn about finance concepts within an investment banking context. The subject will combine the underlying financial valuation concepts with the different capital raising products used by global investment banks to provide students with practical real world skills.

The subject will investigate several capital raising methods used by companies including cross-border merger and acquisitions (M&A), private equity (PE), initial public offerings (IPOs), corporate bond issuances and leveraged buy-outs (LBOs). Current issues, risks and trends in the global investment banking sector will also be examined in order to provide students with a broad appreciation of the role of investment banking within the global finance sector.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe and differentiate between the products and services provided by investment banks.
  • be able to identify, describe and evaluate the different types of capital raising transactions performed by investment banks.
  • be able to explain, evaluate and apply company valuation techniques utilised by investment banks on different types of capital raising transactions; and
  • be able to explain and critically analyse the role and contribution of investment banks to international financial events and crises.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Products, services and activities conducted by investment banks;
  • Company valuation techniques utilised by investment banks;
  • Different types of capitial raising including, corporate bond issuances, private equity (PE) transaction, initial public offerings (IPOs) and leveraged buy-outs (LBOs);
  • Cross boarder merger and acquisition (M&A) transactions; and
  • Trends and challenges in investment banking.
