HIP112 Communication for Health Practice (8)


This subject will facilitate the development of respectful oral and written professional communication skills, relevant to healthcare practice. Students will develop skills in communicating with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; people who have communication difficulties; and people who use assisted communication, in a variety of settings. This subject will provide students with foundation communication skills relevant to health professionals and interprofessional practice, enhanced through guided self reflection and personal exploration. Whilst this subject has an emphasis on the language and conventions used in healthcare practice, it will also assist students to develop their academic and digital literacy, and their skills in information and research literacy.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to explain strategies used in communicating with people with communication difficulties
  • be able to demonstrate skills in therapeutic listening, motivational interviewing, counselling, negotiation and collaboration
  • be able to describe communication strategies for establishing and maintaining groups to facilitate effective teamwork
  • be able to adapt knowledge and skills using research and evidence, as appropriate to diverse rehabilitation contexts
  • be able to reflect on their own communication strengths and weaknesses to inform self-directed learning, personal development and future practice

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Person-focused practice: developing therapeutic relationships and understanding professional-client interactions
  • Obtaining and communicating health information: maintaining confidentiality; medical assessment/history taking; therapeutic listening; counselling; interviewing; working with interpreters; report and submission writing; professional record keeping; introductory skills in augmentative communication
  • Culturally safe communication: identifying and planning for effective communication; consideration of physical, environmental, sociocultural, ethical and medicolegal factors when working with clients, their families and community
  • Conflict resolution: working effectively in teams and groups; facilitating interprofessional practice and effective collaboration
