HLT430 Research Methods in Health Sciences (8)

This subject introduces the principles of research methodology as relevant to the health sciences. It examines the context of research in professional practice in the healthcare field, and will equip students with the basic research skills necessary for their continuing professional education and for pursuing research at honours level. The subject considers concepts in both qualitative and quantitative research methodology and includes basic statistical concepts and methods, and the critical appraisal of literature in science and healthcare.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to accurately describe the fundamental concepts and approaches in qualitative and quantitative research methodology.
  • Be able to identify how moral, ethical, cultural, social, political and environmental issues and responsibilities impact on research.
  • Be able to critically review and critique the literature through the use of valid resources, and thereby provide informed opinion.
  • Be able to demonstrate skills in critical thinking by accurately synthesising new research results in science/health.
  • Be able to apply introductory descriptive and inferential statistical concepts and techniques in the analysis of data.
  • Be able to evaluate the implications of research methodologies on evidence-based practice and on their impact on clinical practice and policy.
  • Be able to apply research methodology to investigate and solve research questions raised in professional practice.
  • Be able to demonstrate skills consistent with life-long learning.
  • Be able to plan for and develop a research proposal.
