Taking an international perspective, key external influences on health services are critically analysed. Students are assisted in identifying and understanding global health priorities, expectations and challenges. Against this background, students consider government policy and social, regulatory, professional and accreditation influences and how a health manager and leader may advocate for policy changes at these levels.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to critically analyse government, social, regulatory, professional, building and accreditation influences on health systems internationally;
  • be able to compare policy directions of health systems internationally;
  • be able to identify and describe responses to global health priorities, public expectations, new challenges and changes from patient and community perspectives; and
  • be able to discuss how a health manager or leader may advocate for policy changes at the government, professional and organisational level.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • TOPIC 1: Government, social, regulatory, professional, building and accreditation influences on health and health care globally;
  • TOPIC 2: Forging and maintaining links with and influencing governing bodies;
  • TOPIC 3: Global health priorities - climate, ageing, refugee health and Indigenous health;
  • TOPIC 4: Health policy; and
  • TOPIC 5: Managerial epidemiology.
