The successful performance of a business is closely linked to an efficient and effective staff, which can also be a source of competitive advantage. This subject introduces students to the roles and functions of managing staff and provides tools on how to employ, manage, appraise and reward staff, within ethical, moral and legal obligations. Students will be required to link these key concepts with their own small business setting.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to apply the processes required to employ, manage and terminate employees within the political, industrial and legal framework of Australian laws;
  • be able to identify the range of contracting modalities available, the decision criteria around their use, and determine the employment/legal ramifications of those choices;
  • be able to use relevant theory to develop an effective and targeted recruitment process, from job design through to the writing of contracts of employment;
  • be able to articulate the advantages and limitations of the various forms of rewards and recognition; and
  • be able to identify the obligations of a Person Conducting a Business Undertaking (PCBU) in the provision of a safe working environment.

  • Defining and evaluating effective staff management practices
  • The Australian legal framework, including award, industrial and employment obligations
  • Job design, recruitment and selection processes
  • Managing staff diversity
  • Appraising and rewarding staff
  • Training and development
  • Managing a safe work environment
  • Emerging themes and trends in staff management
