This subject will expose students to a range of information agencies so that they gain a deeper understanding of both the career opportunities available within the profession, and how various information agencies function to service a particular clientele.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the operation of a range of information agencies and the interaction of the agencies with their users;
  • be able to describe the role of the information professional in various contexts;
  • be able to discuss the range and variety of information agencies and the services they offer; and
  • be able to reflect upon how theoretical and technical knowledge is applied in the workplace.

  • Overview of a variety of libraries and information organisations
  • Providing a link between practice and classroom learning

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 4 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Students visit a range of information environments (e.g. libraries, archives, records management organisations) in which the staff share with students the services, collections and facilities offered by that particular organisation. Students reflect on their experience and discuss this in a formal report.
