Students will be introduced to the concept of information and its related concepts such as data and knowledge. The qualities of information, ways to intelligently manage and use information, the understanding of what constitutes strategic information assets, information visualisation, information culture and the value of information will also be explored. Use of information to create and/or maintain competitive advantage and ensure continuous organisational existence in changing environments will also be examined.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • demonstrate an advanced and critical understanding of the different types of information and data assets in an organisation;
  • demonstate in-depth understanding of the use of financial, statistical, social and qualitative information in decision-making;
  • demonstrate how to strategically diffuse and disseminate information;
  • understand and describe the economic value of information; and
  • understand and describe how to use information to create competitive advantage and organisational benefit.

  • Economic value of information
  • Information assets and their management
  • Financial and statistical data and information use for decision making and competitive advantage
  • Non numerical data and information use for decision making and competitive intelligence
  • The role of information in sustaining organisational existence
  • Information diffusion, information culture and dissemination
