This subject focuses on Muslims in the Australian context. It offers a distinct overview of their past and present, while analysing the Islamic cultural-religious and civilisation manifestations with Australian history. It also explores the impact of early cross-cultural encounters, immigration and social policies on early Muslim settlements in Australia, together with the development of Islamic communities in the Australian context. It examines the influence of multiculturalism on Muslims in Australia, their integration into mainstream society, and their encounters with global issues. Finally, it discusses critically possible connections between historical and contemporary Muslim migration to Australia.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of relevant literature and important Muslim socio-historical issues in the Australian context.
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the socio-historical concepts of immigration, settlement, integration, and social policies in Australia, and the plurality of the interpretations of these concepts.
  • be able to discuss critically the impact of historical events in the settlement of Muslims in Australia, and be able to analyse critically cross-cultural and civilisational encounters between Muslims and non-Muslims.
  • be able to discuss critically the development of Muslim communities and institutions in Australia.
  • be able to critically interpret the past and the present within the context of the actions, values, ideals, encounters and contributions of Muslims.

  • Mosques and their development in Australia

  • The development of Islamic communities in Australia
  • The impact of multiculturalism on Muslims in Australia
  • Muslim integration into mainstream society
  • Muslim encounters with global issues in the Australian context

Residential School

This subject contains a 2 day Optional Residential School.

The purpose of the residential school is to provide an opportunity for exploration of the coursework covered and assessment of student learning. In addition to content review, this part of the course aims to facilitate an interactive session between the teaching academics, students and sections of the Islamic community.
