This subject is designed to equip students with skills and knowledge required for managing projects over the various phases in the Project Life Cycle, from concept to completion. The subject offers an integrative approach to project management, beginning with an understanding of socio-economic and environmental factors that result in the creation of projects before focussing on technical aspects of project planning, implementation and control. In addition, these techniques are related to the parent organisation's strategy and policies, and socio-cultural dimensions involving team management, leadership and organisational structure for projects.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain the role that projects play in the strategic management of organisational change;
  • be able to translate project management theory into specific, real time understanding and implementation of projects in the workplace;
  • be able to gather information, define project goals and objectives and create a timeline so as to present a completed and comprehensive project plan;
  • be able to monitor progress through measurement of resource usage, timeline performance and actual cost versus budget to measure project progress against plan;
  • be able to provide comprehensive risk assessment and management for a project;
  • be able to evaluate project outcomes and provide support for project teams;
  • be able to utilise project management software as a tool for planning and managing a project;
  • be able to successfully transfer outcomes to the customer at completion of the project;
  • be able to develop strategic human (socio-cultural) project team leadership and technical capabilities required to successfully complete a project; and
  • be able to apply the socio-cultural dimensions of projects across international projects, virtual teams and strategic internal partnerships, such as cross-functional organisational departments, and external partners including suppliers, contractors and customers.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Project Management - An Integrative Approach. Topics include: The past, present and future; and The strategy-project link.
  • Project Management - The Technical Dimensions of Managing a Project. Topics include: Understanding Microsoft Project (2010 / 2013); A Structured Approach to Information Collection; The Network Plan and Work Breakdown Structure; Managing Time, Costs and Resources - The Triple Constraint; Evaluating Progress and Performance; and Project Closure.
  • Project Management - The Socio-cultural Dimensions of Managing a Project. Topics include: Project Management and organisational structure; Project Management Leadership; Project Management Teams; Partnering; and International Projects.
