MIN401 Supervision in Ministry (8)

This subject introduces students to the key aspects of supervision in a field education and/or learning context. The student will examine the basic models and theological perspectives associated with supervision in a learning context and undertake critical reflection on their own experiences of supervision. Students will also be introduced to the key aspects of transformational learning and the ethical issues associated with supervision. The student will learn skills in a range of areas, including how to establish and manage a supervision relationship; how to assist in the setting of learning goals; how to evaluate and offer feedback; how to facilitate theological reflection; and how to establish and maintain boundaries.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in ministry supervision in a field education and/or learning context;
  • be able to demonstrate communication, goal setting and evaluation skills to facilitate transformational learning in a field education context;
  • be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of ethical approaches to supervision in ministry and to articulate a personal ethical approach for their own practice;
  • be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of different models of supervision and mentoring;
  • be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in facilitating theological reflection;
  • be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of the boundary issues associated with field education supervision; and
  • be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of ethical issues surrounding supervision in field education and/or other learning contexts.

Residential School

This subject contains a 4 day Compulsory Residential School.

Professional supervision requires that online students receive a set number of face-to-face teaching hours in order to meet minimal industry standard requirements for future professional accreditation.

Special Resources

For online students, travel and accommodation are needed to attend the compulsory residential school.
