This subject introduces the concept of workplace learning and begins to prepare students for their workplace learning experiences. Students will be introduced to the use of mindful communication in the clinical context to create caring moments to support safe care for the patient, family and community. Relevant legal and ethical principles related to scope of practice, and professional boundaries will also be explored.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify the core principles of Watson's Caring Science;
  • be able to describe the use of mindful communication in the delivery of patient care;
  • be able to explain the scope of practice of the student nurse;
  • be able to locate appropriate evidence for practice; and
  • be able to satisfactorily complete the workplace learning assessment tool.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • MODULE 1: INTRODUCTION TO WORKPLACE LEARNING
  • This module introduces students to the key requirements for WPL Verification and other WPL requirements; InPlace; Types of WPL placements; and Comportment on placement.
  • MODULE 2: INTRODUCTION TO CORE LEGAL AND ETHICAL PRINCIPLES
  • This module enables students' learning in relation to the following: Introduction to key legal principles - Australian legal system (legislation and policy), The Professional Regulation of Nursing, National Law; Legal considerations and health care records; Scope of practice; Introduction to ethical decision making; Professional boundaries; and Consent and confidentiality.
  • MODULE 3: INTRODUCTION TO WATSON'S CARING SCIENCE
  • This module introduces students to Watson's Caring Science. Introduction to the Caritas Processes® and Watson's Caring Science; and Caritas Processes® in action.
  • MODULE 4: ROLE OF EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE IN NURSING CARE AND DOCUMENTATION
  • This module introduces students to the use of mindful communication in nursing Mindful communication in nursing; Documentation, listening and non-verbal communication; and Library, finding evidence, interpreting evidence, peer review, use of evidence in practice.
  • MODULE 5: CONTEXTS IN WHICH NURSES WORK
  • the contexts where nurses work (primary, secondary and tertiary health settings; Areas in which nurses work (such as ward types); and different ways that nurses work, within the scope of practice.
  • MODULE 6: ASSESSMENT IN WORKPLACE LEARNING
  • This module enables students' learning in relation to the following: Evidence - clinical evidence for WPL assessment; Workplace learning and assessment; Workplace learning and clinical reasoning; Workplace learning and safe practice.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 5.7 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Students will be introduced to the use of mindful communication in the clinical context to create caring moments to support safe care for the patient, family and community. Relevant legal and ethical principles related to scope of practice, and professional boundaries will also be explored.

Special Resources

This subject contains workplace learning which will require students to expend money, time and travel, possibly away from their term time residence in order to undertake the workplace learning. Workplace learning is a compulsory aspect of this course.
