This subject builds on the learning achieved in the introductory subjects and enables students to continue on their workplace learning journey. Students are supported to establish caring environments in contexts where nurses care of the person, family(ies) and/or community. Within these environments, students focus on what it means to be mindful, work to scope of practice, maintain safety and privacy, and collaborate with other professions. Students will also explore the provision of end of life care.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to apply concepts of mindfulness with colleagues, the patient and family or significant others including self-care;
be able to apply concepts related to the scope of practice of a registered nurse, including inter-professional an intra-professional collaboration;
be able to apply evidence in practice;
be able to apply legal and ethical principles to nursing practice;
be able to demonstrate patient safety, quality and privacy considerations in a caring environment; and
be able to satisfactorily complete the workplace learning assessments for this subject.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

MODULE 1: CARING IN THE PRACTICE SETTING - WORKPLACE LEARNING
Time management;
Self-care;
Evidence - clinical evidence for assessment;
Gathering and acquiring relevant evidence to practice;
Caring in the practice setting and workplace learning; and
Workplace learning and clinical reasoning.
MODULE 2: PATIENT SAFETY AND QUALITY IN THE PRACTICE ENVIRONMENT
Industry standards in relation to safety and quality in the practice environment;
The how, when, where and why of keeping a patient safe;
Vulnerable people and safety;
Medication safety and the Poisons Act across the lifespan;
Responding to clinical incidents;
Quality improvement; and
Safety and caring.
MODULE 3: PATIENT PRIVACY
Legal and ethical requirements for patient privacy, including the Privacy Act;
The how, when, where and why of ensuring patient privacy, including documentation; and
Vulnerable spaces and privacy.
MODULE 4: SCOPE OF PRACTICE, INTER-PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE, INTRA-PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Scope of practice, including duty of care and negligence;
Inter-professional practice and Intra-professional practice;
Mindful communication for patient safety; and
Creating a caring environment through mindful communication.
MODULE 5: END OF LIFE CARE
Definition of end-of-life care?;
The good death: what does this mean?;
Goals of end-of-life care;
End-of-life care, and self-care;
Legal considerations - advanced care directives; and
Ethical considerations in end of life care.

This subject contains a 11.43 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.
