NRS409 Psychosocial Interventions in Mental Health Nursing 2 (8)

The focus of this subject is to extend students' ability to engage in advanced mental health nursing practice.  This subject has 2 specific foci.  Firstly, students will gain knowledge of the relationship between trauma, violence and mental health and ill-health and become familiar with the models of care that focus on recovery and resilience, models of care that enable and empower the clients. Secondly, students will consider mental ill-health from the perspective of 'the lived experience'. Client, family and carers' experiences of mental-ill health will be comprehensively explored and used to enhance the therapeutic alliances and interventions that students have with their clients and their families and carers.  'Lived experiences' will include exploring the impact of diagnosis, medication adherence, stigmas, education, health promotion and prevention and health care service for both clients' families and carers.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate in writing, discussion and clinical assessments, a critical awareness of the effects of trauma on mental health, and the relationship between violence, trauma and mental health.
  • be able to further develop a more comprehensive understanding of the lived experience of mental health/illness, and the skills required to work effectively and collaboratively in the recovery journey for clients, family and carers.
  • be able to demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of models of care that emphasise health promotion, building strengths, enhancing resilience, working collaboratively with clients and carers, and recovery.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Trauma, violence and their impact on mental health and ill health.
  • Client focussed models of care.
  • The lived experience of mental illness as experiences by the client and their family/carer including issues related to stigma, medication adherence, education and therapeutic alliance.
