NRS553 Advanced Practice: Clinical and Professional Leadership (8)

This subject will explore the professional responsibility of the Nurse Practitioner in leading advanced clinical and professional practice. This will include exploring the history and development of advanced practice within the rural and remote, national and international healthcare environment. Students will critically appraise the political, ethical, professional and legal aspects of their role. This will include accountability, legislation, licensure, certification and credentialing. The need to apply an evidence based practice model to underpin nursing practice will be examined and students will engage in leadership activities to further develop knowledge and skills to lead advanced nursing practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding and application of the professional responsibility of the Nurse Practitioner, including a definition of the role, in leading advanced clinical and professional practice
  • be able to critically analyse the factors that can influence the development and implementation of advanced nursing practice and the provision of culturally competent care
  • be able to analyse and synthesise the relationship between health policy, politics, and power in rural and remote, national and international contexts and developments in advanced nursing practice that impact on the delivery of health care
  • be able to articulate the regulation requirements for advanced nursing practice by government, statutory bodies and the profession in rural and remote, national and international contexts
  • be able to identify and appraise the relationships between accountability, legislation, licensure, certification and credentialling to the advanced nursing practice role
  • be able to explain the process of endorsement leading to registration as a Nurse Practitioner
  • be able to critically examine the legal and ethical issues related to advanced nursing practice
  • be able to initiate problem solving and clinical decision making within a multi-disciplinary team
  • be able to monitor and evaluate health outcomes within a framework of evidence based practice and with reference to clinical governance and use of clinical audit processes
  • be able to demonstrate vision and leadership in collaborative practice with the interprofessional team to achieve improved patient outcomes

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Contemporary Issues: history and development of advanced nursing practice; role of the Nurse Practitioner including the provision of culturally competent care, Scope of Practice, Professional Practice Framework, National Framework for Decision Making by Nurses and Midwives on Scopes of Practice; Factors influencing the development and implementation of advanced practice roles e.g. stakeholders, clinical practice guidelines, socialization factors and leadership; Health Policy, a driving force for the development of advanced nursing practice; health policy related to the development of advanced and extended practice; Power and Politics
  • Regulation Accountability: Legislation; Licensure; Certification and Credentialing; Endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner; Guidelines for Endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner; Safety and Quality Framework; Continuing Professional Development; Recency of Practice; Professional Indemnity Insurance
  • Legal and Ethical Issues: Problem solving and clinical decision making within multi-disciplinary teams applying contemporary ethical guidelines and legal requirements
  • Evidence-Based Practice: A model to underpin nursing practice, monitor and evaluate advanced nursing practice to measure health outcomes; clinical governance; clinical audit, tools and process; apply evidence to achieve best practice including use of technology
  • Leadership: leadership qualities and developing potential; vision and goals for leading change; engagement with health care policy; developing strategic plans and overcoming barriers; teamwork and mentoring; collaborative interprofessional practice; disseminating knowledge
