SCI103 Introduction to Geospatial Science (8)

Introduction to Geospatial Science engages students with the geospatial discipline, while providing fundamental knowledge and skills required to understand and develop basic geospatial science applications. The subject uses real-life applications and a problem-based approach to introduce and explain geospatial concepts. On completion, students will be able to identify geospatial science applications relevant to their course of study and future profession, and describe fundamental concepts and methods currently used for geospatial data acquisition, processing and visualisation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify geospatial data and identify geospatial science applications related to the discipline of study;
  • be able to describe concepts related to geospatial data;
  • be able to describe methods of geospatial data collection; and
  • be able to explain methods for geospatial data processing and make use of these methods to solve basic geospatial problems.

  • Geospatial data characteristics
  • Use of geospatial data in current geospatial science applications
  • Geospatial data visualisation
  • Processing geospatial data using Geographic Information Systems
  • Acquisition of geospatial data using global positioning systems (GPS) and remote sensing technologies
