Prep for Teaching Maths 1 (Number and Algebra) is the first in a suite of three Studylink enabling subjects designed to address core Numeracy skills required by teachers to demonstrate the minimum standard as set by the Australian Government. All students enrolled in an initial teacher education course are required to sit and pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education - LANTITE. This subject covers core numeracy content in the content areas of Number and Algebra, including non-calculator skills and working mathematically, which are areas examined in such a test.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to solve financial problems involving earning, spending and investing money;
  • be able to operate with algebraic expressions involving positive-integer and zero indices and explain the meaning of negative indices for numerical analysis;
  • be able to determine the midpoint, gradient and length of an interval, and graph linear relationships;
  • be able to graph simple non-linear relationships;
  • be able to use ratios and weighted percentages;
  • be able to select and use appropriate problem solving strategies; and
  • be able to work confidently without a calculator in the content of the subject.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Simple Interest
  • Compound Interest
  • Index Laws and their use in simplifying algebraic and numerical expressions
  • Scientific notation and its use in the metric system of units
  • Plotting points on a pair of Cartesian axes
  • Graphing straight lines
  • Finding the length, midpoint and gradient of an interval (line segment)
  • Graphing quadratic equations using a table of values
  • Ratios
  • Weighted percentages
