SSS071 Maths Skills 1 - Introductory (2)

Maths Skills 1 is an introductory subject designed for students who are concerned about the mathematics component of their course. The subject assumes minimal mathematics ability and aims to build confidence in working mathematically. The subject aims to systematically build confidence in working mathematically through the development of foundational skills in the basic arithmetic operations, place value, rounding, order of operations, directed numbers, decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios and rates. It also gives an introduction to basic algebra. The subject is taught without the use of a calculator. This subject is designed as a short 14 hour course. Students complete a diagnostic test at the point of enrolment to ensure they do not already possess the skills covered in this basic level subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain and apply the concepts of basic arithmetic; and
  • be able to explain and apply the concepts of basic algebra.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Basic arithmetic: basic arithmetic operations, place value, order of operations, directed numbers, scientific notation, exact and approximate answers, rounding, decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios and rates.
  • Basic algebra: simplifying algebraic expressions, indices and index laws, substitution into algebraic expressions and formulae and introduction to solving linear equations.
