SSS073 Maths Skills 2 - Intermediate B (2)

Maths Skills 2 - Intermediate is taught as two sequential modules A and B, each 14 hours long. Maths Intermediate B builds on the content covered in Maths Intermediate A to develop more advanced algebra and problem solving skills. This subject also introduces linear and non-linear functions, graphing techniques and some simple exponentials and logarithms.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to carry out calculations and use algebra accurately;
  • be able to explain and apply the concepts of exponentials and logarithms;
  • be able to explain and apply the concepts of functions, variables and graphs; and
  • be able to apply problem solving skills to practical problems involving mathematics.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Advanced algebra: expanding special products (perfect squares, difference of two squares), factorising using common factors, factorising quadratic trinomials, solving complex equations including powers and simultaneous equations
  • Exponentials and logarithms
  • Concept of a function, linear and non-linear functions including graphing techniques
  • Solve word problems that involve the setting up and solving of a linear equation or a pair of simultaneous linear equations
