STA172 Introductory Mathematics (8)

In this CSU-TPC subject, students will learn the skills and knowledge required to solve everyday and work related mathematical problems using calculations with integers, fractions, decimals, ratio, proportions and percentages, and the use of simple geometric properties, mensuration in two and three dimensions, basic trigonometry and introductory algebra.

Normally applicants will have Year 12 or equivalent, however applicants with other educational backgrounds will also be considered.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to use properties of angles and shapes to find associated unknown sides and angles;
  • be able to perform calculations with real numbers, fractions, decimals, ratio, proportions and percentages;
  • be able to solve measurement problems in two and three dimensions including perimeter, area, volume and capacity;
  • be able to perform operations in algebra and solve linear equations;
  • be able to represent and analyse linear relationships on the Cartesian plane and solve contextual problems using linear models;
  • be able to solve right angled triangle problems using Pythagoras' Theorem and trigonometric ratios;
  • be able to manipulate and use further algebraic expressions;
  • be able to solve problems involving functions, relations and their graphs;
  • be able to solve problems that involve sequences and series;
  • be able to use exponential functions to solve problems;
  • be able to use logarithmic functions to solve problems; and
  • be able to use trigonometric functions to solve mathematical problems.

  • Algebra - operations, substitution into formulae
  • Cartesian plane, graphing linear functions
  • Gradient, X and Y intercepts
  • Mathematical Problems - limitations in linear models, linear relationships
  • Trigonometry
  • Surds
  • Functions- linear, quadratic and simple hyperbolic
  • Sequence and series - arithmetic and geometric
  • Logarithms -powers and roots, exponential functions, logarithm laws
  • Trigonometry - sine, cosine rule, radians
  • Trigonometry - reciprocal trigonometric functions, sketching graphs
