WEL218 Developing Cross Cultural Competencies (8)

In this subject you will be introduced to key concepts relating to service provision and service delivery and will explore the strategies and competencies required when working with a range of culturally diverse communities throughout Australia. The relationship between cultural diversity and policy development as well as its implementation will be analysed in the context of the social welfare field.


The subject looks at the complex field of working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Content of the subject includes looking at topics to do with: anti-discriminatory practices; structural issues of racism, discrimination and policies; and individual practice issues focusing more on how to work with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

  • be able to understand the strategies and policy implications of access and equity in relation to welfare programs throughout Australia
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of cross cultural competencies in delivering services to individuals, groups and communities from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • be able to assess the impact of policies on special needs groups with possible reference to young people within families

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Anti discrimination and cultural competencies, including: historical background.
  • Practicing cross cultural competencies, including: racial/cultural identity development; use of different cultural frameworks; worldviews.
  • Frameworks for future practice and countering structural stigma, including: the impact of policies on special needs groups with possible reference to young people within families; institutional discrimination; systemic racism; structural competency.
