Normal Course Duration

Course duration referenced below is the effective time taken to complete a course when studied full time (full time equivalent duration). At Charles Sturt the standard calendar refers to 32 points a session over a 2 session calendar year. The Actual Duration is the time taken to complete the course following the prescribed enrolment pattern. A course's actual duration can be affected by the session calendar (number of sessions undertaken per year) and/or mode (full time, part time or mixed) and credit packages which may have been granted unpon admission. Therefore, depending on the prescribed enrolment pattern, mode, calendar utilised and credit awarded a course may take less time or more time to complete than the duration noted as full time equivalent years. Students are advised to consult the Enrolment Pattern to determine the actual duration of study.

Master of Teaching (Primary)

Full-time: 2.0 years (or part-time equivalent)

CSU Admission Policy

  1. A completed Bachelors Degre

  2. A Grade Point Average of 4 or above in your undergraduate or more recent postgraduate studies

  3. Successful completion of acceptable undergraduate and/or postgraduate study that is equivalent to one year of study (1.0 Equivalent Full Time Study Load - EFTSL), usually equating to eight subjects, that fall under one or more of the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) primary curriculum KLAs.

  4. To ensure applicants have an extended depth of knowledge in one curriculum KLA, a minimum of four of the eight subjects must be within one of the following seven primary curriculum KLAs:

The program for which the applicant will be eligible for entry is therefore based on the applicants previous study in the respective primary curriculum KLA.

Applicants who do not fully meet these requirements may be offered a place in the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) course.  This will enable completion of up to two additional KLA subjects to meet entry requirements and permit re-application to the Master of Teaching (Primary).

English Language Proficiency
Refer to http://futurestudents.csu.edu.au/apply/english-language for the specific requirements.
This will apply to both domestic and international applicants. Offer may be conditional on ELP but applicants will be required to provide evidence of meeting these requirements before the start of studies.

Charles Sturt takes a holistic approach to understand each applicants potential for academic success. Each student is assessed on a range of factors including academic readiness, previous study, work and life experience, motivation to succeed, and an awareness of the demands of tertiary study.

Credit

CSU Credit Policy

Credit for a professional experience:

An applicant must demonstrate to the Course Director that the completed task was equivalent to a practicum, that is, the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) had provided the student with an opportunity to satisfy the requirements of a typical practicum.

Typically, this requires the pre-service teacher to demonstrate that they haved developed the skills, knowledge and understanding of the role of a teacher, through employment as a teacher, through:

  • systematic observation of colleague's teaching and professional dialogue about such observations;
  • teaching in a classroom in a collaborative role with an experienced colleague; the development of structured teaching and learning materials that are systematically evaluated;
  • the development of a professional portfolio;
  • discussion of personal teacher development with a supervising colleague on a regular basis;
  • engagement in professional dialogue with independent (university) personnel;
  • formal assessment of teaching competence by a supervising teacher.

For any student who is conditionally employed within a primary school setting and is successful in gaining Professional Experience Credit, the credit will only apply to EPT447 Professional Experience: Positive Primary Classroom Environments. EPT447 includes learning outcomes aligned to the priority area Classroom Management.

This may mean that placement is credited but an additional subjects is required Classroom Management to be completed.  It is a course requirement that students must complete professional experience in two diverse settings, as such, the student must then complete EPT521 Final Professional Experience: Effective Teaching and Assessment in the Primary Years practicum requirements at a different school setting.

Any student who completed professional experience as part of another incomplete degree may apply to have that professional experience recognised as equivalent in the same manner that they would apply for credit for other subjects.

Graduation Requirement

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 128 points.

Course Structure

The course consists of 17 core subjects, of which 56 points are completed at 500 level subjects:

  • 14 core education subjects
  • one extended primary Key Learning Area (KLA) study subject*
    and
  • two professional experience subjects.

All subjects have a value of 8 points, with the exception of two subjects which have a zero point value and the final placement subject which has a 16 point value.

*NOTE: References to a primary curriculum area program within the Master of Teaching (Primary) course equates to the accreditation requirement of a primary specialisation to be developed through the study of advanced primary curriculum subjects in addition to study in each of the key learning areas (KLAs) of the primary school curriculum as defined by NESA (NSW Educational Standards Authority).

Professional Accreditation

Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programs including the Master of Teaching (Primary) are accredited according to national standards prescribed by the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). These include both the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, and their ITE program standards.

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) is the state-based regulator, and it is their responsibility to implement and assure the AITSL standards in NSW. In addition to being the NSW ITE program accrediting authority, they also administer teacher registration.

The Master of Teaching (Primary) is accredited until 31 December 2024.
