APS504 Advanced Trauma Care (8)

This subject develops a student's knowledge in the assessment and management of major trauma in the out of hospital setting. Students develop the knowledge and skills required to enable them to provide advanced critical care to trauma patients at the intensive care paramedic level. Trauma systems, mechanism of injury, trauma patient assessment, and specific traumatic injuries and their management are examined in detail.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to apply knowledge of the underlying pathophysiological processes, with reference to the relevant anatomy and physiology, to traumatic emergencies.
  • Be able to critically evaluate advanced paramedic medical treatments in traumatic emergencies using evidence based practices.
  • Be able to demonstrate safe, competent patient assessment and management of traumatic emergencies in accordance with paramedic guidelines.
  • Be able to apply a knowledge of pharmacology, including specific pharmacological considerations for acute traumatic emergencies as applicable to intensive care paramedics.
  • Be able to articulate the ongoing management of traumatic emergencies of patients in hospital acute care settings.
