BUS102 Learning for Success (16)

This subject aims to enable students to develop their critical understanding of, and confidence in, the English language for use in a wide range of formal and informal situations. The subject will develop students' grammatical accuracy in both writing and speaking; ability to predict and understand written and spoken texts; and understanding of the conventions of academic writing. Students will implement reading strategies; research, select and synthesise information; learn to think critically; and discuss and present information in a convincing and persuasive way on academic topics. The subject also introduces fundamental study skills to prepare students for the rigours of study at the higher education level.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to use reading, writing and listening strategies to make notes, identify and organise important information, and expand vocabulary;
  • be able to analyse the structure and content of written and spoken information, including during lectures and group discussions;
  • be able to research topics of interest using library databases and use APA in-text citation and referencing to acknowledge sources of information;
  • be able to select, organise, paraphrase, summarise and synthesise evidence from various sources to produce persuasive written and spoken texts about a range of abstract, complex and unfamiliar topics;
  • be able to use complex structures to produce clear, cohesive and coherent written and spoken texts; and
  • be able to use critical thinking skills to analyse texts and generate topics of discussion or questions for group discussions and in written communications.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Note-taking skills
  • Essay preparation and presentation skills
  • Starting and forming an academic argument
  • Referencing and paraphrasing
  • Conducting library research (database searches, appropriateness of sources, etc.)
  • English grammar including the passive voice, third and first person, preposition and pronouns
  • Cause and effect language (the subjunctive case)
