BUS110 Workplace Learning 1 (8)

This subject is the first of a series of three subjects which focus on employability skills, personal skills and career planning. The subject has a particular emphasis on enhancing professional knowledge of working in a business environment, expanding on employability skills and building on practical experience. As part of this subject, students will gain practical experience and apply their academic learning in a professional setting through a work placement either with a new host organisation or by undertaking a project or higher duties in their existing workplace.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify personal examples of key employability skills, evaluate where personal skills require development and create a plan of action to show how skills will be developed;
  • be able to discuss the relationship between learning and career and life development, and apply this personally;
  • be able to develop practical competence through personal professional experience by participating in work placement;
  • be able to identify professional, career and life choices, go on to develop a strategy to achieve these, begin to apply them and appraise their efficacy; and
  • be able to reflect on personal career and life choices.

  • Making career enhancing decisions and the role of mentors

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 5 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Students are given the opportunity to develop their employability skills through 35 hours of activity completed as: a work placement with a new host organisation or a new project or higher duties undertaken with a current employer.

Special Resources

Travel may be required to attend a work placement with a host organisation.
