CLS311 Clinical Placement and Authentic Learning 2 (16)

Students are required to complete authentic learning placements in the healthcare environment. In this subject students will apply knowledge learned from previous subjects to further develop skills, attitudes and values relevant to the delivery of care in the out-of-hospital environment. Students will build upon foundational knowledge and education covered to date. Specific protocols, procedures and pharmacology are detailed in the subject outline and the associated assessment items. Students will be responsible for all costs associated with this work place learning subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to undertake patient care activities related to the role of the paramedic as per clinical record book objectives;
  • be able to complete an accurate health assessment and effectively manage out-of-hospital patients;
  • be able to explain / demonstrate the concepts of advanced life support, advanced airway management and drug administration;
  • be able to maintain an effective audit trail of their own paramedic practice; and
  • be able to continually reflect on and improve their practice.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The assessment and management of patients with acute clinical presentations;
  • The assessment and management of patients with chronic clinical presentations;
  • Problem solving approaches with patients with simple and complex health issues; and
  • The knowledge and clinical application of basic life support, advanced airway management techniques and drug administration.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 40 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Authentic learning is a compulsory and important part of the Bachelor of Paramedicine, Bachelor of Paramedicine (Honours).

Students will need to complete 250 hours authentic learning with ambulance service providers and in healthcare environments with varying shifts of 10, 12 and 14 hours. Students will be allocated placement by the WPL team from sites available in NSW. Other state and international ambulance service providers and industry specific sites will offered to students when available.

Students will need to demonstrate competency in a variety of different clinical skills and tasks in order to successfully complete this placement.

Set workplace learning times are allocated to students to complete the hours of placement. These set times may run across the year (in all sessions) however remain a 2nd (60) session subject for enrolment purposes. Placement with ambulance service providers are allocated in a four week consecutive duration. Students must attend these allocated times to progress through the course. Refusal of these allocations without approved special consideration application will result in altering student course progression and potentially delaying expected graduation.

Students need to ensure that they are adequately prepared and meet all WPL pre requisites and any specific requirements of the host sites. All prerequisite subjects must be successfully completed prior to undertaking workplace learning.

Special Resources

This subject is a healthcare workplace learning subject. Students are required to complete authentic learning blocks of clinical placement in the healthcare environment. Students will be responsible for all costs associated with this work place learning subject.

Students may be asked to select from several ambulance placement sites in which to take part in their ambulance workplace placement.  Students will be required to travel to their placement site and sites are located in NSW. Students will need to wear their placement uniform (purchased), helmets (supplied), safety vests (supplied), and safety glasses (purchased). Students will need to evidence appropriate immunisation, first aid certificate, a criminal record clearance and where appropriate, working with children check.
